Tell us about when you started Physi...

I started physi in 1993 - at the ripe age of 2! I don't remember much from then, but as I grew up I made good friends with the girls in my group; Jess, Louise, Emily, Bec and Lauren Perry.

What brings you back to Physi?

Physi is a family sport to me. My grandma did it, and sewed all of my leotards. She helps me now as I sew for others. My mum, Louise, and Aunty Suzanne have been by my side consistently as we grow and work together. My cousin, Bethany has been a growing strength. It has been my honour to watch and help her become the physi girl she is today. We get to compete together for the first time, and I am so excited to be next to her!

What is the best part of the Physi year?

The best part of the year for me is finishing a Team competition. That final pose after the dance gives me great satisfaction, as we have combined 6 very different girls and made one unit. Whether we place or not, I know every one on the stage (including Louise) has done their best work to help our Team and Club achieve success.

What challenges you in Physi?

Physi is always a new challenge. The work always finds new ways to stretch and improve my technique. I even had the opportunity to choreograph some of the Senior work this year, which was amazing! The mind will give up 10 times before the body does - I am reminded of this often... especially in Lunge Group!!

Who are your Physi role models?

My family are my role models. Louise has stuck by me, making sure that I was achieving the best I can, even when I didn't want to. Aunty Suzanne has always been honest and compassionate, helping me find alternative solutions to problems I had given up on. Bethany makes me laugh, and reminds me that it is just Physi at the end of the day, and that I am achieving greatness just by finishing the work. All three of these women are amazing Physi workers in their own work, and I admire them.

Anything else you want to tell us?

Join us! Haha, we are a family first, and look after each other as best we can. Physi is a support system first, and a sport second.

Tell us about when you started Physi:

I started physi when I was a 5 year old because my mother did it as a child and I thought it sounded like fun! I started with a tiny club (Tumbi Umbi) before I moved over to Gosford Wamberal as a 7 year old when Louise needed someone for a team! And the rest, as they say, is history!

What brings you back to Physi?

I keep coming back because I have no idea what I would do with myself if I didn't have my weekly physi classes to look forward to! After so many years it has become a habit that on Mondays (& Thursdays) I go to physi. My brain (& my body) go crazy over the summer when I don't go and I start making up moves or doing old routines without realising it!

What is the best part of the Physi year?

I love learning the new work every year. Its always different and creates a challenge (usually in the form of "Why did they use this music?!"). Then there is also the chance to catch up with everyone from other clubs every year at teams and champion girl. Some of the girls I have known for nearly 25 years!

What challenges you in Physi?

For me the challenge is just simply to remember my work and do my best. I do aim for Grand but I know that making it that far is difficult (I have only made it once in 26 years so far!) so as long as I have done my personal best I am happy.

Who are your Physi role models?

I have always looked up to Melissa ever since I was a teenager and really began to understand just how effortless she looks while performing. I still like marching behind her just so I can try to figure out how to make my marching look as good as hers (I still haven't figured it out after being teammates for over 10 years!). I also look up to Louise and Nikki for not only remembering their own work but every other groups as well! They do it incredibly well and it makes me push myself just that little bit harder.

Anything else you want to tell us?

Don't set your expectations too high. Who knows, you may just surprise yourself with how well you do.

Sophie Kelaher - 14 Years!

Tell us about when you started Physi.

I started doing physi in 2005, when I was 3 years old. I made some good friends in those first few years and enjoyed coming to class with Tamara and Kayla especially.

What brings you back to Physi?

The reason why I have continued with physi for so long is that I enjoy the challenge of learning new work each year and meeting the expectations of the more complicated routines as you progress through each age group. It is also great fitness and the strength, balance and flexibility gained in physi is definitely an asset when trying to master other sports. I have also started helping out in the 2-4 year old class, working with the youngest members of our physi club is great fun and hopefully some of them come to enjoy physi as much as I do.

What is the best part of your Physi Year?

The best part of physi for me is the reward for working really hard throughout the year and making it to State or even Grand. I also enjoy the team work and making great friends, especially last year when Anna and I stayed away for the weekend with our Mums and Nikki to attend a club comp, that was a fun weekend!

What challenges you in Physi?

I have come across challenges in physi when making it to Grand for a few years in a row and never getting a place, it can be frustrating but I use this to encourage more determination for the following year, to look at what areas I can improve on and to work towards those goals. There have been some highlights though, coming 2nd in 2012 (10 Years Section) and 3rd in 2014 (12 Years Section) and making it through to Grand in the tough 13-14 Year old section as a 13 year old to make my 8th consecutive Grand competition in 2015, to name a few! I am always excited to see what the next year will bring!

Who are your Physi role models?

When I want to improve I look to a couple of role models in the club, to Nikki for her knowledge and enthusiasm for dance (and her great help with makeup and hair), to Louise and Debbie for their support and advice on positions and technique and to Melissa for her stage presence and poise (and also for learning about how to become a great junior physi teacher).

Anything else you want to tell us?

Physi is a great sport and I can see myself being involved for a long time into the future!
